KARACHI: Ijaz Butt twice took a nap during a marathon meeting of the National Assembly"s Standing Committee on Sports on Wednesday even as he came under fire from various quarters.

Dr Muhammad Ali Shah, Sindh"s Sports Minister, told "The News" that Butt slept during the meeting even when he was being addressed by Jamshaid Dasti, the committee chairman.

"He (Butt) slept during the meeting which was quite strange as it was quite an explosive session with the sports committee," said Shah, a former member of the PCB Governing Board.

Shah said that during the meeting he underlined the case of financial mismanagement which prompted Dasti to call for a freeze on the PCB accounts. "I recalled the incident when a PCB accountant took Rs10 million in cash and gave it to (former captain) Inzamam-ul-Haq (in 2007). It is a proof of the fact that there is no accountability within the Board," he said.

Shah also informed the committee about the PCB plans of setting up a cricket academy in Karachi at a cost of Rs100 million. "The Board is setting up an academy in Karachi but it has not even bothered to involve the concerned stakeholders," he said.
